It is characterized by the use of large canvases, gestural brushstrokes, and the exploration of the subconscious through the use of spontaneous, automatic, or subconscious techniques. Artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko are considered important figures in the movement.

Today, abstract painting continues to be an important and popular form of art, with many contemporary artists working in this style. Some of the famous abstract painters are Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Barnett Newman, and many others.
