Bhaskar Rao

Artist Bhaskar Rao's leitmotif - 'The Tree' has remained constant as part of his oeuvre over the years in his career as an artist. The Hyderabad based artist is heavily inspired and drawn to stories from Indian mythology that illustrate the sacred balance of trees. When you take a glance at his body of work, it may appear that he seems to be articulating his ideas through his vision of a landscape. However, what stands out is his vision of the tree in myriad hues - which he keeps returning to over the years. The branches carry luminescence similar to precious stones and are delicately rendered with intricate layers of clustered leaves. Bhaskar has painted and drawn trees in many mediums and yet every time he has returned to it with a new vision. In black and white, sombre greys or bright primary colours, the tree stands out resplendently, to remind us of the havoc we seem to cause on the sacred face of the earth in our pursuit of selfish interests. The treatment of the works is “impressionistic” but the linear simplicity and rhythmic liveliness reinstates the charm of Indian miniature paintings; ever so simple and nostalgic, inviting you to revisit places you have touched, smelled and have been to before.
