Ganesh Chaturthi Special - 11 Stunning Ganesha Paintings & Drawings

It is the favorite time of the year once again! It is time to welcome Lord Ganesh to our homes. Ganesh or Vinayaka Chaturthi is dedicated to Lord Ganesh (son of Shiva), the elephant-headed god of all good beginnings and success. In Maharashtra, its not uncommon to go pandal hopping to seek blessings of the Lord along with enjoying yummy modaks. Patrons spend hours waiting in the queue just to get a glimpse of the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai. 

But whether you live in Mumbai or no, we’d suggest you celebrate the festival by indulging in art. And what better art to buy during this festival than that which represents Lord Ganesh. So here we bring to you some amazing paintings of Lord Ganesh that will give you strength and bless you all year long. The first two in the list are by India’s Picasso – MF Husain.

1. Lord Ganesha and Mata Parvati

MF Husain’s love for Hindu mythology was well depicted in all his paintings.  And like many others this one of Lord Ganesha and Mata Pravati turned out to be controversial and he faced severe criticism for the same. The painting is about Lord Ganesh in the lap of his mother, which to some looked like a ‘semi-nude woman’. The painting had to be removed from an exhibition held at JW Marriot hotel in Mumbai after a letter by a guest at the exhibition was submitted raising an objection. The exhibitors – Delhi Art Gallery feared violence erupting and the painting being damaged hence thought it is best to remove it from the exhibition. But as an art lover, you cannot but help fall in love with this masterpiece of MF Husain.

Dancing Ganesh by MF Husain is a visually appealing painting of Lord Ganesh with a musical instrument and dancing to the tune being played by HIM. This painting is a part of MF Husain’s series on Lord Ganesh.

 

 

Lakhs throng to take darshan of Mumbai’s Lalbaugcha Raja each year and its not uncommon to see people waiting in queues for more than 12 hours at a stretch just to get A glimpse of the deity. Artist Vivek Panicker has marvelously captured the beauty and grace of Lalbaugcha Raja in this spectacular painting of his.

4. Ganesha

Capturing the magnificence of Lord Ganesh, Inithan Ponuswamy’s painting titled Ganesha is a visual treat to the eyes. Set amidst a marvelous backdrop of a mix of dark shades, the rust golden painting of Lord Ganesh stands out giving it almost a surreal look. It took the artist a good two months to complete this oil painting and the effort is well seen in the work.

Artist Durshit Bhaskar’s work brings out his fascination for Hindu Gods. Using earthy shades, he has wonderfully captured the aura that surrounds Lord Ganesh. The painting shows the Elephant God with a Shivling set in a frame on the wall of a haveli kind of a structure with a diya kept before it.

The Lord’s deep blue eyes and copper trunk in this painting are almost hypnotizing. It is difficult to take one’s eyes off this spectacular painting by artist Mila Kronik.

 

7. Home with Nest in Hair
Artist: Tilly Strauss

Art is most certainly meant to amuse and this amazing painting by artist Tilly Strauss is different and extremely amusing. The girl in the picture has a nest in her bun with eggs laid in it and then there is a tattoo of Lord Ganesh peeping out from her back. It is as if the artist is wanting to convey that with Lord Ganesh to watch over, nothing is impossible.

8. Deva Shree Ganesha
Artist: Vikrant Shitole

The vibrancy surrounding Lord Ganesh is wonderfully captured by artist Vikrant Shitole in this fantastic water colour painting of the Lord. The painting also has a snake sitting with Ganesh who is holding a modak in one hand and the other hand is shown to be blessing the onlooker.

Using charcoal, Nilesh Gavale has recreated the Lord’s sculpture at Ellora caves on paper. A treat to the eyes!

 10. Shri Ganesh
Artist: Madhumita Bhattacharya

Capturing the beauty of Lord Ganesh’s face, artist Madhumita Bhattacharya’s painting is skillfully created. The choice of colours and the shape of the face are perfect to make it stand out from the rest.
